Biotechnology

"Biotechnology is so much more than CSI!  Scientists across the board use increasingly more advanced technology in the laboratory.  Use of "lab gadgets" and computerized equipment is more and more common in labs ranging from food science to the development of pharmaceuticals.  The increased use of technology in the lab makes for a very unique opportunity for students to combine an interest in science and "gadgetry." The SMSD Biotechnology Signature Program allows students to gain hands-on experience by working in the lab everyday. What a unique opportunity for high school students!"

--Mrs. Bott, SMSD Biotechnology Program Founder

A vital part of the curriculum are the opportunities for design and implementation of original research, job shadow, and/or internship.  Local businesses and academic research facilities offer students an opportunity to “get their hands wet” in a real lab.  Students find the experience rewarding, educational, and one-of-a-kind.

After successful completion of the SMSD Biotechnology Signature Program, students receive the Biotechnology Endorsement on their high school transcript. We pride ourselves in the ability to place students in jobs and/or post-secondary institutions where the students utilize the skills learned in the SMSD Biotechnology Signature Program.
